They say there is nothing worse than a back injury – I’m inclined to agree. Arguably, injuries to other areas of the body can be just as painful – some more so perhaps. A back injury though will very quickly put us out of action. Even the most determined individuals do well to soldier on with a back complaint or injury. Massage Therapy can help ease the pain – here’s how.

In some cases back-pain is a minor annoyance that catches us when we lift, twist or over-stretch. In this instance we might apply cream or take a pain killer as we know the effects are relatively minor. What about other cases though where there is no break in the pain? If pain persists for long periods it limits our capabilities which can then affect us emotionally.

Back-pain can cause a lack of sleep affecting concentration and limiting our ability to function correctly. A lack of sleep could also impact on family and work life. This could lead to emotional issues such as depression making us feel like we are in a room with no doors.

Due to the complex structure of the back it is not always easy to pin point the cause of pain. However, medical guidelines suggest that most back pain is caused by minor sprains or strains. Injuries might also be related to postural problems; not lifting and handling correctly or even poor technique in physical activity.

The lower back is generally the most affected area of back related problems.

Slipped discs are common here as the disc will pinch or press on the nerve. Other causes of back pain can be a prolapsed disc or problems with the sciatic nerve causing sciatica.

If you feel stiff and sore, often in the morning, this might be joint pain which is generally linked to forms of arthritis. This can be a particular nuisance in winter as the cold weather can cause the muscles to tighten due to a decrease in blood flow.

Back Injury

Massage Benefits

Relieve Muscle Tension

Massage Therapy will decrease tension in your muscles and help them to feel relaxed. This will improve flexibility and reduce the severity of pain. This in turn minimises the negative effects such as: lack of sleep.

Muscle Recovery

Massage Therapy will increase your blood flow and circulation. This increases nutrients in the muscles and soft tissues. Massage Therapy will assist in the recovery of muscle soreness from physical activity or the effects of a soft-tissue injury.

Emotional Benefits

Whilst the physical benefits are evident Massage Therapy can also help psychologically too. It does this helping to increase the ‘feel-good’ chemicals (endorphins) that the body naturally produces. This helps you to feel relaxed and can ease depression and anxiety.

Final Word

Back pain from various injuries slows us down fast and prevents us from going about our daily life. Massage Therapy can be used to minimise the negative effects this causes. A course of Massage Therapy provides physical and emotional benefits.
